Forum downtime and server status

Postby Paul » 09 Jun 2014, 13:31

We apologize for the down time our forums have been experiencing. Our hosting company for the forums has been experiencing considerable difficulty with their data centers architecture and they are in the process of making upgrades to their network and servers.

We are monitoring the situation closely and are in regular communication with them. We've expressed our dismay with the multiple outages that have been occurring and have been assured they will have all of the problems resolved soon. We are making the effort to give them the benefit of the doubt due to their open communication regarding the issues.

There will likely be one or two more brief outages over the next few days, then hopefully all should be fixed. Should the issues not be resolved soon, and we continue to have problems with this host in the coming weeks we will transition the forums to a new one.

In the meantime we are making regular backups of the forum's database (twice a day) as well as regular backups of its files. In the worst case scenario, total network failure and data loss, (of which there has been no indication will occur) we could restore the forum with only the loss of the most recent posts and files.

Thank you for a patience,

If anyone is making a post at a time the forums go down, you should be able to return to your previous page and cut and paste your text into a text document for later posting. Just a little tip.

Start all over? Oh God forbid. I do hope they can fix "this", and quickly of course.
Thanks for keeping us informed.

This forum is based off software we installed and configured on the server (phpbb3), we can move it to another host relatively easily. All the posts, uploaded files etc would be moved as well. So no need to worry about starting over.

If we continue to experience trouble with this host we'll copy everything over to the new host. Most users probably won't even notice we've switched to a new server. But hopefully our current host will get their troubles sorted and a transition won't be necessary.

Recently our web host experienced more problems. This time their hard drive corrupted and some data was lost. We've been able to restore almost everything that occurred before 5:00 pm yesterday (Nov 20th, 2014) from our backups. Some posts after that time may have been lost.

Also some avatars and file uploads were not recoverable. If you're the owner of a post missing a picture you should be able to edit the post and "re-add" the picture. Same goes with avatars, if you please upload a new copy of your avatar.

This most recent problem was the last straw, the forum has been transferred to a new host. The new hosting site has not experienced any downtime in years, we're confident it will be a more stable home for the forum.

Thanks,
