Near Future Marines

Postby Jack007 » 18 Nov 2014, 05:31

I noticed, this Thread seems to have gotten lost in the move and I thought I would see what if any interest is still out ther regarding it.

Personally when I think of "Near Future Marines", yea the images from Aliens are among the first to come to mind.
These could also be used in 'later' Apoc scenario's. Or possibly as an oppostion to the Shock Troopers. After all, its not 'exactly' clear they are from earth. Humanoid yes,.. human.. eeh maybe, maybe not. After all being doine in "Heroic 28" does give them that slightly different look, that would work for an alien humanoid race.

Ideas, thoughts, opinions?

Sure. How about the slave soldiers of an advanced extraterrestrial race ala Pournelle's Janissaries series? They are the descendants of humans taken from Earth, bred and raised from childhood to serve their alien overlords as the Janissaries themselves were recruited as children to serve the Ottoman sultans. Selected candidates could even serve as officers of non-human "sepoy" units as part of the alien empire, further diversifying their armed forces options (and making our modeling and wargaming options all the more interesting of WF pursues this avenue).... 8-)

I like the idea of janassaries in space. maybe 20-31 marines and one or two alien officers?

I'm thinking the following:

20 Marines including parts for an NCO. Mostly standard assault rifle analogue, plus a couple of support weapon options.

1 Alien senior NCO/junior commissioned officer with assorted weapon options.

1 robot support/medic able to handle multiple species. being non-human tech, the 'bot would be like a benign version of the inquisitor droid from Star Wars IMHO:

Or perhaps something akin to the drones from The Matrix:

A Marine officer debates the next tactical move with his immediate alien superior:

Weapons may include a number of non-terrestrial technology weapons adapted for use by the human janissaries. I expect they might be a generation or two behind the cutting edge firepower of the non-human aristocracy (kind of like the difference between an M1 Garand and an M16), but still plenty lethal by anyone's standards:

I expect that the mainstay rifle would be an advanced alien upgrade/copy of whatever rifle the janissaries may have been using upon their initial capture so many generation before, but again, on a level of sophistication and destructive power several generations ahead of what we have presently:

Then again, perhaps the janissaries have been so long in the service of their alien overlords that they're entrusted with cutting edge technology, their proven loyalty being regarded as essentially unshakeable even if sent against other humans, in which case, we can get away with all sorts of fun and games:

I mean, really, a "one stop shopping" weapon system capable of everything from non-lethal apprehension of a suspect to frying them in their boots at 3,000 meters would make our human janissaries ideal for policing a vast stellar empire, don't ya think? 8-)

sounds like a plan, I was basing my numbers on modern marine rifle platoons. usually 4 8 man squads lead by a corpral or low grade sergeant plus a platoon sergeant and a lieutenant. suppourt weapons should be LMG's and LAW's.

I know you guys are all for a new Sci-fi Human shooter set, and don't get me wrong I would love to see WGF do another, but isn't this same as the Irregulars proposal.

I would think that would just be head swap and a paint job, plus the US marines aren't always standardized in their chose of actual field equipment. The only things that has to be regimental nowadays are the fatigues and patches, and if anything that will become less important in the future with computerized target recognition. Also why is it always slug guns with you guys, whatever happened to lasers guns and blasters in space opera.

because slug throwers don't throw a fit if you hit them with EMP's. plus with infantry you want to idiot proof the kit for them (brave, stubborn and resourceful they may be). also uniform apperances has another advantage. as burn notice said, it give the impression that you aren't fighting mere men, but rather a large faceless orginization. men are small, orginizations are large.

now then, something I've been sitting on:
