a Potential multi genre mass battle system rules

Postby 1classybadger » 10 Dec 2014, 23:40

as requested in the future products board, I'm making this thread to discuss potential rules mechanics and systems for playing across, ancient and mediveal to sci fi settings. the first thing that we should come up with is the stat line.

I think we should limit the stats to maybe four or five, keep the book keeping easy and simple. first some stat to represent the units proficency in combat, both ranged and melee. next we should handle some kind of strength for the dealing of damage. armor to represent the units ability to take punishment. and lastly some kind of morale or command rating. I would like to know if people prefer the numbers to represent target numbers or the number of dice you get to roll in certain checks?

How about a "Martial Prowess" ability that covers range and melee in one easy stat entry?

well that would be my first thought, but skill at range is not the same as skill in melee.

Ballistic Skill and Weapon Skill should stay separate entries.

Have you looked at how Lord of the Rings/War of the Ring handles combat? It's simplified compared to Warhammer.
Londo: "The Minbari put great emphasis on art, literature and music." Say instead: "They are decadent people, interested only in the pursuit of... of dubious pleasures." It doesn't mean anything, but it scares people every time!

How many figures are wanted on the field, playable in how long? Are we activating by figure, squad, platoon, or other? Same question about dice. What dice do you want to use? How long do you want the rules to be? Cinematic or gritty?

I think these need to be answered before we can construct a unit statblock

well I think activation by unit (20+ figures in this case) would be the best option. play time? maybe 1 1/2 hours at minimum for a decent sized game. as for dice, I'd like D6's or D10's as those are the two most commonly owned dice by gamers. rule length? just as long as it needs to be to get the job done, and preferably simple rather than gritty

If youre doing handsfull of dice, I'd recommend D6, they just scan faster than every other type of dice and you want to reduce the number of mental calculations done per turn.

UGO UGO or interspersed? Blocks of troops or dispersed units? One figure equals one man or many?
